Featuring a stylish pair of piwakawaka/fantail perched amongst an array of native flora. Piwakawaka are small, friendly birds, native to Aotearoa / New Zealand. You will often hear them making loud cheeet, cheeet! noises as they swoop and flit about like little acrobats, hunting for insects. They have the most beautiful fanned tail feathers that take up more than half the length of their body, enabling it to twist and turn quickly during flight.
Piwakawaka hold a very special place in the hearts of many people in Aotearoa, as they have a way of showing up unannounced before or after an important time in a person's life.
Artwork by Northland-based artist, Katy Hayward. This drawing was inspired by her aroha/love for going on beautiful bush walks with her little family, and the joy of being followed by these friendly little birds who dart and chase her daughter around.
