Rangatira hei Kahu Huruhuru

Made in the Wairarapa, these delicately hand-painted, solid lead figurines are created by a local family. Beautifully made, using their own moulds, their emphasis has always been on New Zealand themes.

Taranaki and East Coast Wars 1865-1872

A chief leading the haka wearing a kahu huruhuru - a cloak made of feathers attached to a finely dressed flax base. This cloak sports the white breast feathers of the Kaka and the Tūī. This feather cloak is highly prized as a family and personal heirloom. He holds a kotiate, a close quarter weapon made from whale bone.
